A royal history
Founded in 1847 by watchmaker Louis-François Cartier after he took over his master’s workshop, the brand’s humble roots trace back to its origins as a small watch vendor based in Paris. Although the business was passed down the family, it would be Louis’s grandsons, Louis, Pierre and Jacques, to catapult the family’s status as luxury watch designers.
Following the company’s growth and an increasing international clientele, it was not long before the house become covetable internationally, with branches opening up in New York City, London and Saint Petersburg. By the turn of the century, the label began to reach significant attention with its innovative designs, fashionable watches and contemporary Art Deco influences. Famous for being the choice for royal families’ coronation jewelry, Cartier was immediately marked as exceptional, with King Edward VII once referring to the label as ‘the jeweler of kings and the kings of jewelers.’
