Established in 1986, Oliver Peoples began when friends and optometrist students decided to open up their label, buying old frames from an archive to lock in a vintage influence. The brand became an instant hit; and almost four decades later, it still creates some of the best eyewear in the industry.

This is exactly why we’re covering Oliver Peoples in the fourth installment of our authenticity series. We’ve previously taken a closer look at how you can spot real Jacques Marie Mage, Prada, Miu Miu and Gucci sunglasses and now to follow up, we’re giving you some expert tips about how to authenticate your Oliver Peoples frames.

The frame

The brand starts its craftsmanship with a detailed process that begins with prototyping and passes on to handcrafting. Careful attention is applied to every detail before the third phase, which is called tumbling. This is when the frames are passed through a four-day process which smoothens the raw acetate, creating a polished look.

Signature materials from the brand include polished cellulose acetate, Japanese titanium and top-quality metals. This extends to every detail, hinges included. Most frames have three-barrel hinges which ensure durability and easy foldability. When checking the frame, make sure there aren’t material imperfections and that the frame is sturdy, without weak hinges or flimsy details.

The temples

We’ll check the internal and external temples. On the external temple tip, there is an Oliver Peoples plaque. It’s embossed on the acetate or metal and it is clearly defined. Due to its size it might not be on metal frames.

Along the internal arms, you’ll see other important details. They are not always in the same place, as it is based on style and temple size. But look out for the brand name, model name, model code, color code, frame measurements and CE and UKCA stamp. On metal frames, some of this information such as the frame measurements could be found along the bridge.

The Breath logo

Another important part of the authentication check involves the lenses. Lenses are always engraved with the Oliver Peoples Breath Logo. Fog the lens with your breath and the brand’s signature logo will appear. It is a discreet signature that helps showcase the authenticity, and as the label describes, it's a product detail for those ‘In The Know.’

The packaging

Authentic Oliver Peoples sunglasses will always arrive in the brand’s signature packaging. The details can change based on collaboration releases and style, but most frames will come with a classic hard case with a magnetic clasp and a soft fabric pouch case. Special edition releases will come in different packaging, dedicated to the collection’s unique aesthetic.

There will also be a Luxottica QR Booklet which you can scan to view the product’s conformity declaration.

The price

Oliver Peoples is a premium brand with luxury price points. Due to limited discounts, the brand’s official frames are usually not sold for under 200 euros. So double-check the price when you shop for your next pair.

Where to buy your Oliver Peoples sunglasses
