The Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, is quickly approaching. Originally celebrated predominantly in East and Southeast Asian countries, the Lunar New Year is now an international celebration to herald the arrival of spring and invite prosperity.

From traditional preparations to new capsule collections with designer houses, here are all the details to know for the Lunar New Year 2024.

When is the Lunar New Year 2024?

While the Lunar New Year isn’t until February 10th, those who celebrate start the preparations in the days leading up to the date. Some preparations are unlucky to do on the actual day, so cleaning and sweeping the house to ‘wipe away’ bad luck is done before.

Self-care rituals such as hair washing, nail cutting and bathing are also traditional, but never done on the day itself.

How is the Lunar New Year celebrated?

The Lunar New Year is traditionally celebrated with family and friends. Lucky foods are shared and made together, including rice and red bean cakes, steamed dumplings and fresh fruit.

Festivities center around welcoming prosperity for the year to come through fireworks, parades and gifts in the form of money tucked into small red and gold envelopes.

2024 is the Year of the Dragon

This year, the lunar calendar celebrates the start of the Year of the Dragon. It’s the only imaginary animal in the cycle, and it is synonymous with the luckiest and strongest sign.

There are 5 elements that each sign falls under, gold, wood, water, fire and earth and 2024 marks the Wood Dragon. Similar to the other dragons, the Wood Dragon is described as an introvert who excels and is easygoing under the spotlight.

Designer collaborations for Lunar New Year

Every year, designers also celebrate the Lunar New Year with capsule collections, and 2024 is no different. Prada released a dedicated campaign, highlighting signature looks such as its Prada Symbole sunglasses.

Bottega Veneta named actress Shu Qi as the face of its Year of the Dragon Campaign, ‘First Sunrise With You,’ while Gucci picked actress Tian Xiwei and actor Zhou Yiran as the faces of its 2024 Lunar New Year capsule collection.

What eyewear to wear for the Year of the Dragon

Seeking a pair of frames for the festivities? When picking out eyewear for Lunar New Year, consider the lucky colors for the Year of the Dragon. These include metallics such as gold and silver and grayish whites. Earthy beiges and browns are also considered lucky for Wood Dragons.

Traditionally, red is also another auspicious color for celebrations, with traditional dresses and clothes featuring the hue. While the shape is up to you, vibrant red sunglasses are one way you can welcome prosperity for the new year.
